Grafting Session Rescheduled

03 Sunday Feb 2013

Due to the weather last month, we have had to reschedule the grafting session, planned for Sunday 10 February 2013, for a later date (to be arranged). The rootstock is not ready for Sunday. But we will be holding our maintenance session, including basic pruning of the apple trees. Watch this space or our Facebook page for the new date.

The January weather has had all sorts of effects on plants and wildlife – many plants that should be in garden centres are still in waterlogged fields, yields of root vegetables and brassicas are down. Don’t forget to feed the birds and provide fresh drinking/bathing water for them – unfrozen! I learned from the lovely Winterwatch programme that a small bird such as a wren can lose half its body weight just surviving a long cold night, so they need all the help they can get. Down in the orchard the bulbs under the cherry thicket are emerging, and there are tentative signs of Spring, but we have a long way to go yet. This is the time to prune your apple trees, while they are still in their Winter dormancy – come along this Sunday and we will give you a brief demonstration, and update you about the grafting session, which we will hold as soon as possible.

Grafting Workshop 10 February 11am – 1pm

28 Monday Jan 2013

Our next maintenance session will be a grafting workshop, teaching basic grafting techniques for fruit trees.

We will demonstrate fruit tree grafting, allowing participants the chance to use cuttings from the orchard’s trees to graft on to suitable root stock. The cost of £5 per root covers the costs of the rootstock and other materials. Pear rootstock and scion wood is available for anyone more interested in pears. All tools including pruning knives will be provided for use during the workshop. You don’t need to have any prior experience – just turn up and have a go.

Building a home for swifts

24 Thursday Jan 2013

We are bidding for funding for a swift tower on the edge of the orchard site. This will provide a safe and purpose-built nesting site for these endangered birds. Swifts are on the RSPB amber list as their numbers have fallen dramatically in the past few years, this is often an unforeseen consequence of housing improvements leading to a loss of nesting sites. We hope to have a tower in place for the 2013 breeding season. Swifts are sometimes seen above the orchard; we would love to offer them somewhere to land and raise their chicks.

You can see an example of how the tower will look here Swift tower diagram

Wassail Weekend is coming

06 Sunday Jan 2013

I am getting very excited about our 2013 Wassail – I think it is going to be something special. Because of the popularity of the event, we have spread it out over the weekend. Saturday 12 Jan is given over to the lantern making workshops, where you can turn up and make a lantern to use at the Wassail. The workshops are being held in Trumpington Village Hall, which is easy to find and has adjacent parking. Full details on the Village Hall – just click here.

Then on Sunday 13 Jan we will have the Wassail itself in the Orchard, with a lantern procession from tree to tree. Just turn up at the Orchard gate, bringing some form of light or lantern.

Spread the word, invite your friends. Download our poster and share this post. I look forward to welcoming you to the Wassail Weekend.

Winter Wassail, 2013

06 Thursday Dec 2012

We first made Wassail lanterns two years ago, and it’s hard to convey in words how lovely, and right,  they looked as the children processed with them down to the orchard, and skipped from tree to tree. Our only mistake was to hold the lantern making session on the same day as the Wassail, which led to some time-management issues for us, and some lanterns that were still soggy from the glue! So this time, the Wassail’s going to last all weekend.

Saturday 12 January. Wassail lantern-making craft sessions
Open to families – accompanied children of all ages.
Trumpington Village Hall
11 – 1pm OR 2 – 4pm
£2 per lantern made. (+ £1 for an LED tealight, if you need one)
Tea, coffee, small cakes available to buy.
Come and make a lantern from colourful tissue paper, twigs and a lot of glitter, to hold during the Wassail the next day. All materials supplied.

Sunday 13 January
Join our Wassail celebration of the apple trees and help to ensure we get a good year’s apple growing in 2013. The Wassail will start at 3:30pm. Bring a light and wrap up warm to enjoy music, singing and some traditional mulled apple juice with which to toast the trees, and wish us all a good harvest. All ages welcome, free admission, donations gratefully received.

Rosehip syrup

12 Friday Oct 2012

The fruit harvest has been variable this autumn. I’ve had no quinces on my trees at home, and as you may have seen in the orchard, we have suffered from bitter pit and apple scab. But the rosehips are shining out from the hedgerows. Apples and roses are closely botanically related – you can see this when you look at the structure of a rosehip, where you get the remains of the flower. It looks much like the bottom of an apple. Rosehips are packed full of vitamin C, and also have a wonderful fruity, almost wine-like taste. You can make wine from them, or you can make syrup, which is what I’ve been doing this week. It takes a little time, but it’s very simple.
Image

Here are my hoard of washed rosehips, carefully picked over to remove any bits of leaf, stem etc (and any wildlife!)

Image

Bring the rosehips to a rolling boil in an equal quantity of water. They will take a long time to soften up, at least an hour, so keep an hour of them and top up the water now and then.

Image

When the rosehips can be squashed with a spoon, tip them into a sieve (with a large bowl underneath!) and mash them through as much as you can. You will get left with a paste of pips, ends and, importantly, this will also remove most of the little irritant hairs that are in the rosehips.

Image

Then strain the rosehip juice through a square of muslin, back into your cleaned saucepan. To this filtered juice add a lot of sugar (hard to be precise – I have no scales, and you just have to do it to taste) and also the juice and a big chunk of peel of a lemon or an orange. Boil the juice until syrupy and reduced by about half. Let it cool, and pour it through a fresh square of muslin into a jug. Then you can pour your finished syrup into clean containers.

Image

Have a spoonful a day to keep colds away, or use it as a sweetener for herb tea, or pour it over baked plums or apples.

Bat Night and Moth Morning

04 Monday Jun 2012

The orchard is holding its annual bat walk and moth night on 9th and 10th of June 2012.We will meet in the orchard at 9pm on Saturday 9.6.12 for a bat walk along and around the guided busway. Moth traps will be set up at this time and you can observe how this is done. Meet again at 10am on Sunday 10.6.12  in the orchard to empty the moth traps, identify the different species and release them back into their habitat. Dave Jackson,a local bee keeper, will then give a talk about honey bees and show the colony that is in our observation hive. This promises to be a very full weekend as this Sunday is the second Sunday in the month, so we will also have our maintenance session. We will carry out the regular tree check and weed around the base of each tree. The hedgerows need invasive weeds such as bramble and elder removing .All help is gratefully received. Looking forward to an exciting weekend.
Please remember there are no facilities on site, and especially for the bat walk please dress for the weather and bring a torch.

We’re busy raising the profile of the Orchard, and standing up for the regeneration of apples and orchards. We had a stand at the very successful Seedy Sunday – Trumpington’s seed swap, and one of the team was interviewed by Cambridge105.fm. As soon as I know the podcast is up, I’ll publish a link to it.

On Friday 10 February we will be at the Energise Cambridge rally on Parker’s Piece between 12 – 2pm.

Don’t forget the Orchard monthly meeting, on site between 11am – 1pm Sunday 12 Feb. Come along and help us with some pruning. You don’t have to come for the whole session, just drop in when you can.

Tuesday 14 February sees Joanna giving a talk about the Orchard Project and all things apple to the Romsey Garden Club. The talk will take place in Ross Street Community Centre, Cambridge, at 7pm. Fee payable on the door.
