Midsummer Picnic 21 June 2015

01 Monday Jun 2015

As I write this, the rain is lashing down outside, and the temperature is ‘well below the seasonal average’, which is Met Office speak for ‘too flipping cold.’ However, we are nothing if not optimistic in the Orchard, and so I am looking forward to our Midsummer Picnic. We are holding this on Sunday 21 June, from 12:30pm. There will be story telling, a treasure hunt and art activities (suitable for young children.)
Bring your own picnic and a rug, and come along to enjoy the atmosphere of the orchard on Midsummer’s Day. This event is just £2 per person or £5 for a family group.
We will be on hand to give advice on the care of fruit trees in your own garden, and on all related topics.
I am looking forward to this event so much – bring on Summer!

Learn how to graft your own trees

14 Tuesday Apr 2015

Sunday 19 April 2015 11am – 1pm
Come to the orchard and learn how to graft fruit trees. We will provide all the tools you need. Rootstocks are available to buy at £5 each (cash – exact money only –  or cheque). You can take home your newly grafted tree, ready to plant. We have a range of varieties to graft onto the rootstocks, or you can bring a scion (a thin straight new twig) from an existing apple tree that you have, so that you can increase your trees.

(Please bring/wear clothes suitable for changeable spring conditions and outdoor work)

Swift Tower Official Opening

10 Thursday Jul 2014

On Sunday 29th June we declared the Swift Tower (it deserves those capital letters) open for business, and a group of Orchard supporters gathered to encourage the swifts to take up residence. Looking at one of the photos it seemed that all we managed to lure was a helicopter, but it’s very early days.
We were delighted to welcome The Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Gerri Bird, and her partner, Mr. Alan Pooley, JP, to our orchard, as the City Council has supported the orchard from the beginning. We also received a ‘big cheque’ from the Waitrose Community Matters Fund, represented by Sadie Takeley. Dick Newell from Action for Swifts, who built our amazing tower, was there with information about these lovely birds.
And a very big thank you to Susanna,  one of the orchard’s founders and the main instigator of this project. We hope the swifts come along to see her.

Digging and grafting

04 Sunday May 2014

It’s been hard work and a lot of fun down on the orchard recently. Together with our friends on the allotments, we got involved in the Cambridge Big Dig weekend. We put in a raised bed for some herbs and got busy weeding and tidying. And we’ve also run a course on the ancient art of grafting fruit trees. This is the technique of joining the fruit bearing scion to the rootstock, which gives the height and vigour of the tree. If you would like to learn more about grafting and have a go yourself, then please get in touch and we can run this course again.

Swift action needed – more winter events coming up

25 Friday Oct 2013

Oops! When I first posted this I was a month ahead of myself! NOTE CORRECT DATE is 29 October for the swift tower.

On Tuesday 29 October from 12 midday  we need lots of strong helpers to get the telegraph pole for our swift tower, and the nesting box in place. Many hands make light work and the 8 metre pole will need a few pairs of hands to get it in place. Come along and help if you can (or at least make encouraging noises from the sidelines).

Cambridge Past, Present and Future will be holding a hedge laying course on 16th and 17th November 2013 and we are delighted that the course will be using the orchard hedgerow for the practical side of this (pm Sat and all day Sun). So,  to prepare for this our November monthly maintenance session on 10.11.13 will involve coppicing the length of hazel at the end of the orchard nearest to the guided busway (in order to provide hazel to tie into the hedge) and removing the chestnut paling fence to give access to the hedge from both sides. Again, we need some muscle power for this one, so please come and help even if you can provide only a half an hour.

And finally, a bit more relaxed feel for our last event this year – The Trumpington Christmas Fair on Sat 30 November. From 12 midday to 3pm we will be selling local apple juice, mulled apple juice and seasonal bakes. If you’d like to bake something for us to sell, drop us an email or just turn up on the day with your offerings. We’d love some help to staff the stall as well!

Apple days are here again

06 Sunday Oct 2013

I cannot believe it; every year the change of the seasons takes me by surprise (usually when I realise I need to put new batteries in my bike lights). But the leaves are turning, conkers are falling on my head – and apples are ready to be picked.

This year we are supporting two local events:
Scotsdales Apple Day on Sunday 20th October
Cambridge University Botanic Garden Apple Day on Sunday 27 October.

Come and see us at these events – we will have grafted trees for sale at the Botanic Garden, while Scotsdales is hosting a recipe swap, so bring your family favourites.

I am also giving a talk to the Plant Heritage Society on Saturday 12 October.
Meanwhile, down in the orchard today, I found the nest of a Rusty Tussock Moth – with Mama moth in residence, looking after her eggs.  And that’s a lot of babies!

We need a lot of hands!

20 Friday Sep 2013

We’ve got a lot happening on site soon, so if you can spare us an hour we would love to see you (and put you to work). We will have a double activity/work force on site on Wednesday 9 October 2013, at 9:30am, when we will start digging the hole for the telegraph pole, which will have the swift tower at the top of it! We need some help moving the soil onto a tarpaulin, plus help digging (using tools provided) . At 11am on the same morning volunteers are coming to build the herb garden raised bed using the BAMNuttall railway sleepers.  Any extra help here would be appreciated, again this is going to be barrowing weeds to the compost heap and barrowing soil into the orchard.

Look out for information on our next work day, where we will be preparing for hedgelaying.

We have had a donation of an apple crusher/juicer, so you are welcome  to come to Foster Rd Allotments on Sunday 29.9.13 between 10am and 12 midday to see how the set works and  bring your own ripe apples for juicing.

If you’ve got any queries, just drop us an email or a comment on this post.

Grafting Session Rescheduled

03 Sunday Feb 2013

Due to the weather last month, we have had to reschedule the grafting session, planned for Sunday 10 February 2013, for a later date (to be arranged). The rootstock is not ready for Sunday. But we will be holding our maintenance session, including basic pruning of the apple trees. Watch this space or our Facebook page for the new date.

The January weather has had all sorts of effects on plants and wildlife – many plants that should be in garden centres are still in waterlogged fields, yields of root vegetables and brassicas are down. Don’t forget to feed the birds and provide fresh drinking/bathing water for them – unfrozen! I learned from the lovely Winterwatch programme that a small bird such as a wren can lose half its body weight just surviving a long cold night, so they need all the help they can get. Down in the orchard the bulbs under the cherry thicket are emerging, and there are tentative signs of Spring, but we have a long way to go yet. This is the time to prune your apple trees, while they are still in their Winter dormancy – come along this Sunday and we will give you a brief demonstration, and update you about the grafting session, which we will hold as soon as possible.

Grafting Workshop 10 February 11am – 1pm

28 Monday Jan 2013

Posted by trumpingtonorchard in events

Our next maintenance session will be a grafting workshop, teaching basic grafting techniques for fruit trees.

We will demonstrate fruit tree grafting, allowing participants the chance to use cuttings from the orchard’s trees to graft on to suitable root stock. The cost of £5 per root covers the costs of the rootstock and other materials. Pear rootstock and scion wood is available for anyone more interested in pears. All tools including pruning knives will be provided for use during the workshop. You don’t need to have any prior experience – just turn up and have a go.
